Watson’s Results in Healthcare

I’ve discussed Watson before, and how intuitive and game changing this technology is, but have I mentioned how life saving it can be? Watson in Pharma and life sciences is finally here, and the results are nothing short of astonishing. When using Watson in a Healthcare setting, a Physician is given choices and can confidently create the best course of treatment specific to each patient. “ Watson acts almost like a colleague who is able to gather information, prioritize it, be current in all the Medical literature and present it in a way that it is useful when meeting with a patient”  says Dr. Mark Kris of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Memorial Sloan Kettering has trained Watson to synthesize vast amounts of data, such as physicians’ notes and reports, lab results and clinical research, to help community physicians identify treatment options for cancer patients. This training has given the physicians at MSKCC the ability to deliver evidence based medicine through analytical approaches creating more of an understanding on how to fight Cancer as a disease.

Watson is able to analyze huge amounts of data and reduce it down to critical decision points, which then helps to form the best treatment plan choices for each individual case. This helps eliminate over testing on patients and accelerate their treatment time frame as well as personalize their overall plan.

IBM Watson has also been implemented at WellPoint where its helped UM nurses make faster decisions on treatment requests. The Utilization Management (UM) process, which governs the preapproval of healthcare insurance coverage for many medical procedures, can be extremely time consuming. Requests can take on average, 72 hours for urgent preauthorizations and 3-5 days for elective procedures. With Watson in place, responses can be received in seconds, with greater accuracy and better consistency. Wellpoint’s goals were to accelerate processing of physicians’ treatment requests, save members’ time and improve efficiencies in the approval process, while continuing to base Utilization Management decisions on medical evidence and clinical practice guidelines. With Watson’s help, they have achieved just that.

Healthcare and Quantum

Last week our VP of Healthcare, Don Faistl and I had the opportunity to chat with a lot of Healthcare professionals at the NJHIMSS event. One of the major concerns everyone seemed to express was the importance of Backup and Disaster Recovery Plans. As we approach winter and our recently abundant “Blizzard season”, I thought I would take a moment to let you know about another company within the Healthcare industry that was recently able to reduce the size of its backups by up to 80 percent, significantly save on storage costs, and achieve automated remote replication for their disaster recovery plan.

Egton Medical Information Systems (EMIS) a leading software provider with more than 39 million patient records and 50% of practices across the UK. They were looking for a solution that would be able to provide robust data protection, ultra fast performance, scalability, ease of use, the works! Quantum was able to provide them with exactly that with their DXi6700 disk Backup Solution.

  • Reduces needed backup capacity by up to 80 percent
  • Delivers performance up to 160MB per second
  • Minimizes bandwidth required to move backup data over the network
  • Provides practical and cost-effective remote replication in support of disaster recovery protection
  • Encrypts transmitted data for protection against unauthorized access
  • Significantly reduces storage costs
  • Ensures fast, reliable restores
  • Eliminates need to hire additional admin staff, despite increased data growth
  • Provides fast, detailed,drill-down reporting on the backup/restore situation

According to Mike Marchant, the Data Center Manager for EMIS, one of the key advantages of the DXi appliances has been the embedded deduplication.

“Using the deduplication functionality, we only back up the changed data, and this has reduced the size of our backups by up to 80 percent,” Marchant says. “The store would typically be 30TB, but using the integrated deduplication in the Quantum DXi6700 appliance, we have reduced the backup to 5TB. The backup window has shrunk commensurably, too.”

EMIS deployed DXi6700 appliances in two data centers. Two Quantum Scalar i500 intelligent tape libraries complete the picture, offering seamlessly integrated disk-to-disk-to-tape protection and vaulting off-site.

Are you interested in reducing your backup capacity? Increase performance? Decrease storage costs? (I think we all are)

Are your employees communicating safely and efficiently?

If you wanted to tell a friend something quickly, how would you go about sending that message? If you’re like most Americans in 2014, you would text them. Wouldn’t you want to be able to take advantage of that same technology when delivering a message to a colleague? In everyday life we use SMS Text messaging to send quick messages to one another via our cellphones, so why can’t we use it in the workplace? What if a nurse could text a doctor their patient’s vitals so he/she can quickly assess the information and send back a quick treatment plan while en route elsewhere? Wouldn’t that speed up the patient’s treatment? Isn’t that kind of quick response something hospitals drive for?

With all the regulations in our workplace (ie. HIPPA, ) sending a regular text message doesn’t quite measure up to being the most secure way to deliver a message. But if this method saves time, is more convenient for all parties, and gets the job down faster, than there must be a way to implement this technology where it can comply with all the necessary regulations.

Celltrust has come up with a solution and it doesn’t only apply to the Healthcare industry, but also to the Financial, Government and Enterprise industries as well. Each industry segment has their own set of regulations they must abide by when discussing business related topics, and with text messaging being one of the most convenient and popular ways for individuals to have a discussion, its only natural that employees would want to carry on discussions that way. And in reality, whether or not the company approves, employees will continue to do so on the unsecure text messaging device until a solution is put into place.

So what are the risks and how does Celltrust handle them :

Celltrust Solution

  1. Lack of Confirmation: Those who send messages do not know if the receiving party ever read them.

IBM’s Acquisition of Fiberlink

IBM is known for purchasing smaller niche companies and intermingling their technology with their own, and they are looking to do exactly the same with Fiberlink and its MaaS360 technology.

Who is Fiberlink and what do they provide?

Fiberlink’s MasS360 is an enterprise mobility platform that enables key features such as end to end security and management for applications, documents, emails and devices. MaaS360 provides end users with maximum flexibility to BYOD environments with multi-platform support, self-service enrollment, customized over-the-air configuration, automated policy enforcement, and secure distribution of apps and documents. With MaaS360 you can pick from one of the following product modules, or put a few of the modules together to create a bundle and meet more of your mobility requirements.

  • MaaS360 Mobile Device Management
  • MaaS360 Mobile Application Management
  • MaaS360 Secure Document Sharing
  • MaaS360 Secure Mail
  • MaaS360 Secure Browser
  • MaaS360 Mobile Expense Management
  • MaaS360 Laptop Management

Why did IBM buy Fiberlink?

IBM decided to acquire Fiberlink because its product portfolio was lacking a substantial mobile SaaS option. With continued enterprise interest to minimize data center usage and move to cloud-based services, the acquisition of Fiberlink will allow IBM to fill this gap and integrate the technology with other cloud offerings as well to provide a more complete overall solution by being able to build, run, manage and deploy mobile applications.

Fiberlink’s competitive advantages will further enhance the IBM solutions, by adding:

  • Simple and fast SaaS deployments with an exceptional customer experience for IT and employees, users can often enroll devices in less than five minutes with self-service.
  • Powerful management and security capabilities that are tightly integrated allowing for a complete solution to secure the device, application and the data.
  • Flexible mobile application container options to separate work and personal data and improve BYOD deployments.
  • Seamless integration with existing enterprise systems such as email, directories, and certificate authorities that can usually be completed within an hour.
  • The most trusted and proven approach to delivering mobile management and security backed by a FISMA Authority to Operation (ATO) from the US Government.

What Maas360 will bring to IBM’s endpoint manager?

Combined with other IBM MobileFirst offerings and recent acquisitions, Fiberlink and IBM will provide:

  • Comprehensive mobile solutions. IBM will be able to help clients with their full mobile management and app lifecycle needs – including on-premise and cloud, mobile devices and desktops. Provides seamless integration with existing enterprise technologies and broad OS support.
  • Rapid time-to-value. Enroll devices in less than five minutes with hosting and simple device on-boarding capabilities, hosted in the cloud. Automation and employee self-service reduces the impact to the Help Desk. Easily scale from ten devices to enterprise scale deployments.
  • BYOD and Trusted Transactions. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) requires balancing organizational security and employee privacy. MaaS360 by Fiberlink, an IBM Company offers dual-persona management over enterprise apps, secure e-mail, web browsing and file sync to achieve this balance.

And if all that isn’ t enough, MaaS360 is the most recognized, award-winning solution for Mobile Enterprise Management. The following are a few of their most recent awards:

National Health IT Week

So in honor of National Health IT week , I wanted to let you all know a little more about Acuo Technologies, a company that we at Metrotech are VERY proud to be partnered with.

Acuo Technologies’ goal is to provide software that when implemented, “result in the ability for a healthcare enterprise to get pertinent data into the hands of medical personnel faster and more cost effectively. This will enable patients to reduce wait times for treatments and medications and reduce the potential for human error in care delivery and administration. In the end, these efficiencies and quality enablers will help the overall clinical process run smoothly and allow the patient to have a better experience. “

Acuo’s Universal Clinical Platform [UCP] is tomorrow’s solution today for simplifying clinical content management, including medical images and non-DICOM clinical content. A true vendor neutral archive (VNA) solution, UCP was designed for healthcare organizations that want to regain control of their data and achieve enterprise-wide interoperability across multiple disparate PACS with only one archive to manage.

UCP advantages include:

  • Integration capabilities through HL7 for synchronization of all managed content
  • Enables digital information to flow to and from multiple, diverse storage devices
  • Eliminates current and future downstream migration issues and vendor lockin
  • Unique workflow across disparate systems without unique custom engineering efforts
  • Enterprise wide reconciliation allowing consistent patient information across all systems
  • RHIO/HIE and IDN readiness
  • Ability to connect to any image system to share data and collaborate freely across the continuum of care
  • Create a “Google‐like” environment to aggregate, federate, and virtualize medical imaging assets and related content
  • Manage all data within an XDS context delivering standards based capabilities across all content types
  • Performance dashboard enables administrators to monitor enterprise status and behavior at a glance
  • Support for all existing and future viewing technologies
  • No change to physician look and feel on any PACS
  • Multiple integrated replication and business continuity options
  • Service-oriented, peer-aware, grid-based solution that offers unlimited scalability in both number of integrated client systems and storage capacity
  • Flexibility to manage departmental workflows and ILM requirements
  • Flexible foundation for accessibility and integration of all data types, DICOM and non-DICOM, into the ever-changing clinical environment through standards-based protocols
  • Aggregates and federates DICOM objects and query results as well as virtualizing and replicating all clinical content via on-premise and cloud-based deployment
  • Network buyback through load optimization, pre-fetching, compression, throttling and multi-point routing

I’ve highlighted a few key points that I found as differentiators, but the one that I think is most important is the fact that their approach is focused on seamless integration of all PACS and storage solutions, giving you more choices. In the traditional PACS way, you would be locked into certain systems and storage solutions based on the PACS system you chose. Now with the ACUO solution, you will be able to choose the best performing solution for your specific environment. The benefits don’t stop there, with the Acuo solution in place, you will only need to mirgrate your data over one more time, no more
migrations just because of an upgrade!! That’ll save your IT department a lot of headaches annnd some serious money now won’t it!

If you’re looking into improving your healthcare facility (and you should be ) and the way departments and physicians work, I highly recommend looking into Acuo Technologies and all the capabilities their solution can bring to your environment. This is just a blip of all the benefits that Acuo can bring to the table – as always contact me for more information.

Healthcare IT Predictions

So as everyone knows our Healthcare rules and regs have been under change since Obamacare has come into play, and all opinions aside, our healthcare IT system is in desperate need of a face lift. I mean really, why are we getting the SAME tests taking each time we go for a second opinion? Why do we have to go through our medical history every time we go to the hospital?  Don’t physicians share our information to prevent over medicating? unnecessary xrays? unnecessary testing? Over all, the lack of collaboration between medical professionals is absolutely unbelievable. Nevermind the lack of collaboration between medical professionals and patients. Now that is next to non-existent.

According to HealthLeaders Media’s article on the Top 10 Healthcare IT Predictions the number one prediction is that Patients will demand to know “Where’s my data??”. So not only will patients’ data need to become accessible, it also needs to remain secure, easy to read and understand, as well as easily accessed by other physicians. Acuo Technologies has already mastered the VNA to allow physicians in different fields to view the same patient data with out having to retest, but what about patients? How are they going to access their data?

I’ve referenced IBM’s new social business platform before, but I can’t help myself! Its the solution to all our problems! Patients will easily be able to access their data. The platform is based off our most popular social media websites, ie, Facebook, so patients will be able to navigate flawlessly. There is a secure log in and password for each user, as well as public areas so that organizations can announce upcoming events or articles of interest to their patients.

Being socially connected is expected in today’s world. Business’s aren’t “trusted” unless they have reviews posted and are searchable on Facebook. Hospitals and Doctor’s offices should model their new platforms after this. Patients want access to their data and with EMR becoming mandatory it has never been easier to supply them with such.
