Watson’s Results in Healthcare

I’ve discussed Watson before, and how intuitive and game changing this technology is, but have I mentioned how life saving it can be? Watson in Pharma and life sciences is finally here, and the results are nothing short of astonishing. When using Watson in a Healthcare setting, a Physician is given choices and can confidently create the best course of treatment specific to each patient. “ Watson acts almost like a colleague who is able to gather information, prioritize it, be current in all the Medical literature and present it in a way that it is useful when meeting with a patient”  says Dr. Mark Kris of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

 

Memorial Sloan Kettering has trained Watson to synthesize vast amounts of data, such as physicians’ notes and reports, lab results and clinical research, to help community physicians identify treatment options for cancer patients. This training has given the physicians at MSKCC the ability to deliver evidence based medicine through analytical approaches creating more of an understanding on how to fight Cancer as a disease.

Watson is able to analyze huge amounts of data and reduce it down to critical decision points, which then helps to form the best treatment plan choices for each individual case. This helps eliminate over testing on patients and accelerate their treatment time frame as well as personalize their overall plan.

IBM Watson has also been implemented at WellPoint where its helped UM nurses make faster decisions on treatment requests. The Utilization Management (UM) process, which governs the preapproval of healthcare insurance coverage for many medical procedures, can be extremely time consuming. Requests can take on average, 72 hours for urgent preauthorizations and 3-5 days for elective procedures. With Watson in place, responses can be received in seconds, with greater accuracy and better consistency. Wellpoint’s goals were to accelerate processing of physicians’ treatment requests, save members’ time and improve efficiencies in the approval process, while continuing to base Utilization Management decisions on medical evidence and clinical practice guidelines. Healthcare and Quantum

Last week our VP of Healthcare, Don Faistl and I had the opportunity to chat with a lot of Healthcare professionals at the NJHIMSS event. One of the major concerns everyone seemed to express was the importance of Backup and Disaster Recovery Plans. According to Mike Marchant, the Data Center Manager for EMIS, one of the key advantages of the DXi appliances has been the embedded deduplication.

“Using the deduplication functionality, we only back up the changed data, and this has reduced the size of our backups by up to 80 percent,” Marchant says. “The store would typically be 30TB, but using the integrated deduplication in the Quantum DXi6700 appliance, we have reduced the backup to 5TB. The backup window has shrunk commensurably, too.”

Are your employees communicating safely and efficiently?

If you wanted to tell a friend something quickly, how would you go about sending that message? If you’re like most Americans in 2014, you would text them. Wouldn’t you want to be able to take advantage of that same technology when delivering a message to a colleague? In everyday life we use SMS Text messaging to send quick messages to one another via our cellphones, so why can’t we use it in the workplace? IBM’s Acquisition of Fiberlink

IBM is known for purchasing smaller niche companies and intermingling their technology with their own, and they are looking to do exactly the same with Fiberlink and its MaaS360 technology.

Healthcare IT Predictions

So as everyone knows our Healthcare rules and regs have been under change since Obamacare has come into play, and all opinions aside, our healthcare IT system is in desperate need of a face lift. I mean really, why are we getting the SAME tests taking each time we go for a second opinion? Why do we have to go through our medical history every time we go to the hospital?  Don’t physicians share our information to prevent over medicating? unnecessary xrays? unnecessary testing? Over all, the lack of collaboration between medical professionals is absolutely unbelievable. Nevermind the lack of collaboration between medical professionals and patients. Now that is next to non-existent.

According to HealthLeaders Media’s article on the Top 10 Healthcare IT Predictions the number one prediction is that Patients will demand to know “Where’s my data??”. So not only will patients’ data need to become accessible, it also needs to remain secure, easy to read and understand, as well as easily accessed by other physicians. Acuo Technologies has already mastered the VNA to allow physicians in different fields to view the same patient data with out having to retest, but what about patients? How are they going to access their data?

I’ve referenced IBM’s new social business platform before, but I can’t help myself! Its the solution to all our problems! Patients will easily be able to access their data. The platform is based off our most popular social media websites, ie, Facebook, so patients will be able to navigate flawlessly. There is a secure log in and password for each user, as well as public areas so that organizations can announce upcoming events or articles of interest to their patients.

Being socially connected is expected in today’s world. Business’s aren’t “trusted” unless they have reviews posted and are searchable on Facebook. Hospitals and Doctor’s offices should model their new platforms after this. Patients want access to their data and with EMR becoming mandatory it has never been easier to supply them with such.
